Started with Garageband as I'm a mac user. It was ok. Moved to Hindenburg Journalist - good, but limited to 5 plugins at that time. Tried Adobe Audition, great tool, not a fan of the recurring cost. Now using Reaper. Paid for it, though you can use it without paying. Support software devs if you can. Very powerful tool. Can use all the plugins I want. Also do side chaining and groups. Highly recommend if you're a gear head.
